Coming soon … The 2017 NASCENT Challenge

Last year’s ESCAPE challenge was inspiring, with multiple, “departmental”, teams vying for a successful escape.  Alas, no team was able to escape the room within the time allotted, but great teamwork was on display and all teams were able to navigate a fair way through the challenges.

This year’s event, the 2017 NASCENT Challenge, a Scavenger Hunt promises to be even more exciting.  With 12 teams competing, randomly selected team members, and two sessions (morning and afternoon), the event promises to be competitive.  Using smart devices, logic, deduction and inquisitiveness, teams will be confronted with several tasks and will need to work as a team to accomplish as many tasks as possible within the timeframe given.

Let the games BEGIN!

Rapid Prototyping

NASCENT Engineering has recently welcomed a new type of prototyping technology to its R&D toolbox. The “FlashForge Creator Pro” is an extrusion-based printer and can print ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) at .4mm layer accuracy.

This allows us to prototype new designs, in detail, with production quality-strength more quickly and more cost effectively than ever before. It’s easy-to-use interface allows us to import 3D models directly from Solidworks and begin prototyping immediately.

Of course, engineering will continue its rapid prototyping and small production processes that have been so successful for us in the past but, this new addition enables the CAD models for certain R&D parts to be physically developed, reviewed and tested even more quickly; effectively cutting development cycle iteration turn-times in half (or more).

It's that time...

“Good habits formed at youth make all the difference.”
- Aristotle

Time for priming our 2017 internship program.  This is a program dear to my heart, and I hope you guys embrace it.  Too many times we’re so focused on our day to day tasks at home and at work to take a moment to reflect on our past.  I ask you to take a minute or two to remember what it was like to be at opportunity’s door with unchartered territory in front of you.  Think back to when you made that fateful decision to embrace adulthood, accept responsibility, and step out into the workforce as an individual; eager yet unprotected and a bit uncertain, but cautiously optimistic.

For some of us, that decision came too early, unexpectedly, or unsolicited.  For others, it may have been after graduating high school or college.  And some felt that same way upon returning to the workplace after a long period of time.  Regardless, that unmistakable feeling should never be forgotten.

BUT… wait!  That feeling I so affectionately described most times came with teenage-like awkwardness, novice mistakes, and often riddled with embarrassment.  How many times during those first few months did we say, “did anyone see that?” … “how’s this supposed to work” … “this wasn’t covered in class” … “what? Passing gas is NOT funny? No beer in the fridge?” … etc.

Now, then, it’s our turn to provide guidance for those soon to enter the workforce in a year or so.  We, as seasoned professionals, may not be able to put all those uncertainties to rest, but we can certainly provide early guidance to a few, select individuals.  We have the opportunity to expose them to the workplace, to real-world projects and issues and to prepare them for their future career(s).

If done correctly, we’ll be able to make use of their work while showing them that it’s really not that bad out there; and, perhaps, if they’re good enough, even have them join us F/T contributing team members after they complete school.

Our program is structured in such a way as to expose them to our team members at all levels.  To receive guidance from us, to perform worth-while duties, to explore their capabilities, and to give them an opportunity to present their work in front of their peers.

I encourage managers from our various departments to take this program seriously and submit your requests to HR as soon as possible.  Great minds await!

Oh, and for the rest of the team that may be feeling old at this point, just remember:

“No one who is young is ever going to be old.”
- John Steinbeck (East of Eden)

NASCENT’s 2016 Escape Challenge

On July 6th & 7th, NASCENT created internal teams and had a contest to see which team could escape first, fastest and with almost no clues!

Teams were challenged to escape the Bank Heist at Exit Strategy here in Charlotte. We also had our JAX team working to escape in Jacksonville, FL. The rooms were extremely difficult and only 2 clues were awarded to the teams.

After an hour of being locked in a number of very small rooms, finding clues, solving puzzles and having to communicate and work together, it came down to one team: Victorious Secret got the furthest of all the teams with their 2 clues winning the contest!

We celebrated company-wide with lunch and Italian ice.  The winning team was awarded $50 gift cards for their success!

We delivered "Jimmy", our 1000th AGS Kiosk to NS

On Friday, December 5, 2014, NASCENT delivered the 1000th AGS kiosk to NS.

During the ceremony, in a moving tribute to James Z. Peepas, Fabio Teti explained that the kiosk is named in memory of James Z. Peepas, an industry pioneer, colleague, and friend whose tireless efforts enabled NASCENT to enter the railroad sector, providing NS with their first AGS in 2002.

Tribute to James Z. Peepas
A crystal commemorative plaque engraved with the words, “Dedicated in honor of James Z. Peepas, an Intermodal Industry Pioneer.  His tireless dedication to improving the intermodal industry resulted in the introduction of NASCENT to the railroad sector” was presented to Mr. James Shondel, grandson of James Peepas and CEO of Remprex, who received it on behalf of his grandfather.
